Sinking In

It took a little while but the shock of the gender determination has worn off and I'm enjoying dreaming of what life will be like with a little guy.

And this didn't hurt either...

I ordered a grey flannel pageboy hat this week. I saw a mom with her baby last year with one of those hats and I thought it was completely adorable, that if I had a boy I had to have. So, I bought three! One 0-3 mos and another 9-12 mos. And a tan corduroy one in 3-6 mos. I couldn't help myself. $18 bucks well spent!

This week work occupied much of my brain and emotional energy as we had to deal with an impending deadline for some of our clients. This particular deadline is an extended one by nearly three months and honestly it's really hard to have sympathy for some of these people who have known about their responsibilities all year and waited until the last possible minute. Glad this week is over.

Anyway, Marvy has been quite anxious about giving the baby boy a name. We have had two names that we have batted around for years. Well, I say we've batted them around...Marvy would say that it was a sealed deal. The first name for the first child and the second name for the second. My preference was for the name he wanted for a second son. So when my MIL and SIL started to refer to the baby as 'X', I immediately said, "Well, we haven't finalized it yet". Truthfully, I wasn't prepared for that and I just didn't like other people naming my child before I did. Marvy was disappointed because in his brain that's just what it was going to be.

He was so bummed that I wasn't there yet.

I was joking around at work and said that I should hold up a flash cards with the names and say, "Who are you baby? Kick once for Yes, and two for No."

But, like I said, the shock of the whole thing slowly wore off especially after the stressful part of the week was over, and I was able to really imagine the first name and what it meant to Marvy. At one point this week I heard in my brain, "His name is 'X'" and it made me happy.

I decided I would surprise Marvy with the news. I took on of the ultrasound photos and picked up a matte and frame. I then had below the photo, "To My Darling Husband - Introducing Your Son, _____ ______"

I had him meet me in the Park because it was a beautiful day. He opened up the gift bag and was absolutely speechless. He loved it. "Oh, how CUTE" he said. I loved looking at him. He stared at the photo for the longest time. Then he looked at me to tell me how happy he was, then he went right back to looking at the photo.

Our baby has a name and we're both happy.

Wowzers... We Saw a Little Wee Wee!

"Oh - My - Gosh"

I think that was the direct quote from me when the ultrasound technician announced, "It's a Boy".

She pointed out the boy parts, and boy were there boy parts. I'm amazed they show up that clearly so early!

My heart jumped out of my chest. And I spent the next two days in total shock. It's now official. We are going to have a son.

Our family is thrilled. This will be the first child that will carry Marvy's family name as everyone else has had girls. Marvy's grandparents were really excited about that.

And today, Marvy and I spent the first football Sunday with our son as we watched the now 5-0 Denver Broncos beat the Patriots. (heh, heh, heh)

I think I felt him fist pump a "Go Broncos".

This Blog is Bananas - 100th Post

For a while there I was convinced that my 100th post would have happened sometime in July. Infertility was a muse. One in which I was inspired daily to write, not necessarily about negative things either. Writing after a BFP is challenging. But, one in which I have determined that I'm going to stick to. DANG IT!

So, I believe the occasion calls for a song. Don't you? This is a shout out to all my ALI girls...

(Thank you Gwen Stefani)
All the girls stomp your feet like this

A few times we've been around the IF track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
'Cause we ain't no hollaback girls
We ain't no hollaback girls

BUT Let me hear you say
This blog is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S
This blog is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S
This blog is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S
This blog is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!

Thank you to all you lovely, lovely bloggy peeps that I have come to know and love over these last 100 posts. I appreciate you all sticking around and I think you are the stuff that great friendship is made of.

In other news...

I'm just starting to feel the baby move...well I think. I felt little tiny pokes every once in a while but I couldn't tell if they were just weird body stuff happening or the little frijole. A few weekends ago in the early morning I felt more consistent little pokes on my lower left side of my abdomen. And since then I've felt them in the same spot about once or twice a day. Especially after I eat. That would be the baby right? Not my imagination?

I created a website to house information, photos, and videos about the pregnancy and baby. I would love to invite any of my blog readers to view the site. I think it's pretty cute Here's what the front page looks like now...

I have a spot to view belly pics and also ultrasound photos. If you would like to be included in an invitation please send me an email to livsblog1stedition@gmail.com . I will send you the invite with a link and the password. I only ask two things, 1.) that if you visit that you let me know you were there. You will find a guestbook where you can leave a quick message 2.) Know that included in the website is sensitive information such as our names and family members' names. Please be sure to only reference our real names on that website. Here in un-password protected blogland I ask that you stick to Liv & Marvy.

As of tomorrow we will be at 20 weeks. Holy freaking cow. Halfway to 40. Halfway to becoming parents. It has been a dream for so long it's crazy when reality checks hit you. This Friday we will have our ultrasound where there's a good chance we'll know just what kind of baby we'll have. Will we be parents of a daughter or son?

It's an exciting milestone. Everyone always asks if you have a preference. I never respond with, "As long as it's healthy I don't care!". Of course we want the baby to be healthy. We pray daily for a healthy baby. So, I don't try to cop out of the question. The truth is, it flip flops all the time. Some moments I want a boy because I want my children to have an older brother like Marvy. My favorite names we have picked out are for the boys, so it makes that decision easy. Plus a whole bunch of other good things about boys have crossed my mind. Then in the next moment I think about how great would it be to have a girl. I was the oldest child and I'm sure if we had a daughter first they would be like me with maternal instincts at an early age ready to help their parents with her sibling. There are also so many other friends and family that are having girls that it will make it quite fun. I'm very excited for Friday's appointment. Not just to answer the gender question but also to see what the frijole looks like now. I'm hoping that we see a bit more detail and some cute profiles.

I hope you all take me up on my invitation to view the new website, but either way please be sure to come back next week to see what our 20 week ultrasound tells us!

Marvy and Liv Enjoy Night Out on the Town

The night out was fabulous. We arrived at the Ri.tz C.arlton and enjoyed the cocktail hour. Well, I should say half of us enjoyed the cocktails, the other half enjoyed the h'orderves! We were able to mingle with the nationally recognized orchestra performers of the evening and our company's clients. Assigned to a perfect table facing the stage and dance floor, we sat down to dinner, accompanied by the orchestra's pianist. Oh, it was a heavenly meal. A mixed green, spiced pear and apple salad with candied walnuts - saladly goodness. Melt in your mouth steak, scallops, asparagus and mashed potatoes. Ooey - gooey warm chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and pistachio ice cream. Enough to make one pregnant woman very, very happy.

The performance included not just the nationally recognized orchestra and conductor, but also a Ton.y award winning broadway actress/singer. My did she have an ego. Every song introduced included some convoluted story as to how the song was connected to her. But at least she was very entertaining. The orchestra played a number of pieces that brought out many to the dance floor. Most of the people on the dance floor were in their 50's, 60's, 70's. And most of them danced beautifully. The older gentlemen in their tuxes with white hair dancing with their wives of many years was so cute! And boy can that generation dance! Marvy and I get points for making out there - but man did they dance circles around us.

We had a lovely evening and I wished we could have taken more photos. Unfortunately we left the camera in the car which was valeted, and our camera phones took the worst photos. But, here is a little something. A photo from the lobby.

I loved that dress. I bought it in the spring for a friend's wedding and it was rather big on me, but the style of the dress was so forgiving that it didn't make a difference. Now, I'm thankful I bought the bigger size because it fit perfectly. If I didn't put my hands to the belly, one could not tell I was expecting.

This past weekend we went to visit my in-laws. It was my FIL's 60th and my MIL flew in my SIL with her now 9 week old baby as his birthday present. Despite the six hour drive and short time to spend we had a good time. An interesting emotion struck me, one in which I don't even feel my vocabulary includes a proper term for it. It wasn't exactly jealousy or disappointment or sadness but there was something that my infertile heart still had a hard time with. When I walked into the house there were quite a number of items recently purchased by my MIL for the arrival of her new grandbaby. A large play yard and swing were in the living room, baby bottles in a sterilizer in the kitchen, a box of C.ostco diapers and crib with appropriate sundries in our bedroom. The other bedroom occupied by my SIL and baby included a bassinet, and stacks of baby clothes. It was a weird feeling.

For a second I wanted to flee - which is hard to figure out why. Yes, my MIL purchased these things so that way she had them for her daughter and grandchild. But I know she also purchased these things so that way she would have them for all her grandchildren - including our child. It's silly to feel anything other than happy to see my MIL so accommodating for her children and in laws. We arrived late in the evening and pretty much went straight to bed. After seeing the crib in our bedroom I said to Marvy, "Thank the gracious Lord that we're pregnant right now." He asked why and I said because of all the baby stuff. It struck me that it didn't even occur to him.

I guess it just goes to show you that although a BFP is winning the first battle, it's a long way before infertility resolves itself.

More on the visit... (I've got pictures of the baby and she's a cutie pie) and more on going up to see her in Oregon at another time.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments. I've been a bad reciprocating commenter but I'll get there very soon...bear with me!

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder? Right?

Miss me? Hopefully the title is true?!

Trying to toss my lack of posting guilt down the garbage disposal as I'm sure you will all forgive me...but still. I've been so bad and I'm so sorry. I probably should have realized how busy I was going to be and give everyone fair warning. We've had weekends stuffed to the gills traveling to see family and will continue to do so this weekend. In case you've never picked up on this I normally do my blog posts on the weekends. And not being home means one messy house, one neglected blog, buckets of bloggers whom I have not been able to comment (although I have been reading...and praying for everyone. Look at me! I'm a lurky loo now!) past due email responses piled up like the laundry.

I have started a few posts but they never went past the draft stage...which is a shame as one was a lot of work, and good stuff too...but now I guess is outdated.

So, first things first. Status updates. I am at 8 weeks. The frijole is doing well, last u/s heartbeat was pumping away at 156 bps. I haven't had too many symptoms. Boobies are still sore, obviously pretty tired as lack internet love can attest, and I'll get hungry pretty quickly. But, thankfully no nausea, sick feelings, food aversions, (or cravings for that matter either) mood swings or lost tempers. Not rubbing that one in...truthfully just waiting for the other shoe to drop in the symptom department. I'm glad I kept my fat pants from when I was a few sizes up from two years ago...they are coming in handy now.

Soon to be coming are posts of: Telling of the rest of the siblings and family, and Meeting of the Bloggers Three. I still owe you guys the following posts: Telling of the Soon to be Favorite Uncle, Telling of the Coworkers, and Telling of our Very Good Friends. They were each pretty cute ways of sharing the news especially with our friends this last Friday. A couple of my friends have actually NOT been reading my blog which made our reveals perfect. Remember when I had those warnings: Do Not Read if you know me IRL? They actually listened! And one very close friend was a complete trooper about it. When she found out on Saturday, her husband thanked me for "getting her" because he tries to surprise her with stuff all the time and she always figures stuff out. But, for some reason she kinda let it go and it turned into a grand celebration on Friday. I'll definitely share these...as I must have these stories documented anyway. (Memory growing weaker...)

But, until then I'll share something else going on. Let me start with a story.

There was a couple who inexplicably became marooned in the desert. Although surviving, it was becoming especially tough to keep going. Luckily the two had developed some pretty good survivor skills and had many people praying for them.

Then one day the two of them notice two riders in the far off distance. They are riding right towards them. They are overjoyed at the prospect of being rescued by these two special riders. Finally, to be taken out of the desert together and able to move on in their lives reunited with the rest of their family. They begin to make plans. They dream of the life they will have now that they will no longer be in the desert.

As they celebrate the riders are coming closer and closer. The hot sun is still blinding them against the sand. The heat of the scorched Earth distorts the picture and they begin to wonder if they are seeing a mirage. One places their hands on the sand to feel the vibration of the hooves. Surely this is not a mirage as they can feel the pulse. The rhythm of the horses is beating over and over. Rescue is certain.

As the image finally comes into full view it becomes apparent that although they will be rescued, there is only one rider. This changes much of the plans. No longer rescued together, they have to leave one behind. As excited as they are to meet this rider it is overshadowed by the fact that their plans have changed and their ideal situation will not come to pass. No doubt everything will be fine in the end, just not the initial intended outcome.

Anybody figure it out yet? This is how I picture our current situation.

At our 6 week ultrasound the doctor announced 2 gestational sacks and to start preparing for the prospect of twins. It was still super early at only 6 wks and 1 day so they wanted me to come in the next week.

We were so excited to be having twins. Something we had always wanted. We changed our prayers from "the baby" to "the babies". I couldn't help myself and started window (a la internet) shop for twin things. We started to consider the possibility of a much earlier due date and thinking we wouldn't be able to leave our area for Christmas to stay nearby our doctor just in case.

Then at 7 weeks both sacks were there but one slightly bigger than the other. We hear the term "vanishing twin" for the first time and the doctor prepared us for what would more than likely be the case. The heartbeat on the first one was going strong, but they couldn't even see the fetal pole on the second gestational sack. We were truly devastated. We heard the heartbeat for the first time, and it should have been a special moment. Instead I was too fixated on the second one to really "hear" it.

I went back to work and spent a good 90 minutes wondering what I was doing there. I described to my boss in an email (who knows what is going on) with the subject line, "tempered happiness"It feels like celebrating a birthday and a funeral in the same day. A co-worker (who did not know anything about our IF or pregnancy) passed me in the walkway to the parking garage and said, "So, how was your doctor's appointment?" Still alive?" He was making a small joke, and normally it would be funny. I laughed and said, "Yeah, still alive today". I shook my head. Boy, if he only knew. He brought his wife and kids to work and made a point to pass by my desk to say hello with them. I swallowed the lump in my throat and started chatting with the kiddos - three boys and a baby girl. They are very sweet, cute kids. I asked them how their summer was going and the two oldest were talking over each other with excitement to tell me about swimming and other activities. The youngest boy just shook his head in agreement. It was priceless. I could have hung out with them all afternoon.

Later that evening, as I shed my work clothes for night time shorts and t-shirt, it's as if I shed my "hanging in there" positive attitude I had at work along with it. I didn't want to eat, I couldn't talk to Marvy. I surfed the Internet, while he played a computer game most of the evening. We barely spoke for hours. I needed to do laundry and pack for our early morning trip the next day. I was in the mood for neither. I cried for hours that evening. But, by the next day things improved. We were able to have a day of celebration with my brother sharing in our news.

We changed talking and praying for "the babies" back to "the baby".

Then came week 8. As soon as the wand went in the difference in the sizes in the gestational sacks was huge. I didn't let any of that bother me, because I had already succumb to the thought that we were really only having one baby. Within seconds of the image showing up on the screen we hear the doctor say, "Well I can see a heartbeat flicker on the second one." The first one was measured and is right on track. She measured the second one and it is five days behind. She was unable to "measure" the heartbeat, but we could all see the flicker. She turned on the color flow on the ultrasound machine and you could see this pump, pump, pump in bright red, right where she said the heart would be.

I wasn't expecting that. Although I knew that was a possibility. I remember even warning Marvy the previous week that the second one could even have a hb and still disappear later. Still I guess it's different when it happens to you.

When Marvy and I went to lunch, he confessed to me his plan until the next ultrasound. He didn't cry but I could tell he was close. His eyes were very red. He said, "I want to do something. You don't have to do the same thing. Before, I just thought that there were two sacks but one baby. After today, I can't possibly give up on that baby right now. Only God knows what will happen, but I'm going to pray for that baby. It would be such a miracle and such and awesome thing if we were able to tell a story of how that baby were to come to be. He told me that he was going to give that baby a name, which he told me. He was going to do a fast for the next week. Not of food, but of time wasters. No TV, computer, radio, video games. Instead he was going to do something productive or pray for the baby by name."

So, now we are back to praying for "the babies" instead of "baby". And one of them has a name.

I'm stuck in emotional limbo. I had my cry at our 7 week ultrasound, I mourned for the idyllic image of an instant family of 4. I felt much better towards thinking there was one. Although I saw the flicker just like Marvy did, I do not want to get so attached that I become even more devastated after our appointments this week.

Well, there's the story of what's going on right now for ya. I've got the possibly "last" RE appointment on Wednesday, and our first OB appointment on Friday. Hopefully, we'll have some idea one way or the other by then, exactly which way this is going.
